Crawldaddy and her kids have been travelling cross-country selling fine leather apparel in their van. Unfortunately they break down right in the middle of killin' this rich businessman. Tom and his wife decide to put them up for the weekend. However, their neighbor Paul, a disturbed ex-cop, discovers that the clan has been killing people and skinning them alive! It's the most realistic "crazy backwoods family" movie since THE HILLS HAVE EYES and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. It's fun for the whole family...the Manson family, that is!!

This isn't for fans of B movies, it doesn't rate nearly that high. It's maybe a D movie, or even an E movie. And it's greatest accomplishment may be to prove that you can shoot 78 minutes of film on a budget of maybe $8, tops. But you know what, it's fun, the gore is silly, the dialogue unspeakable (literally and figuratively), the production values little-to-none ..... but it eventually offered lots of laughs, some intentional, some not, and I had fun watching it. So you know what? I'm throwing four stars at it. Bite me. And Mary Jackson can come to my house for dinner any time. Hubba hubba, wotta babe.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie. Most reviews are negative and just by looking at the box you can see that it isn't quite Oscar material, but I'm glad I took a chance on the movie. It reminds me of the Little Shop of Horrors remake. Yes, it's gory, but it is also hilarious, intentionally so in places. An odd combination of slapstick humor covered in blood and guts, this film is worth a look if that's your taste, but I would recommend previewing it yourself before deciding on whether or not to buy it outright. This is the type of movie you either love or hate with no middle ground in-between.

But if you're trying to picture what the film is like mentally take Night of the Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw Masscher (which this movie copies A LOT) and Hairspray (the movie) and blend them until you have a combination. That's scarily accurate of this movie's style.

I liked it, but I love low budget horror.

From seeing all the negative reviews right here on amazon I thought that it might be one of the worst horror films of all time and I had lowered my expectations, but the film turned out to be just O.K. If you watch this film expecting a masterpiece then forget it but if you just want to watch a cheap and very gory film then go ahead but you might want to rent this first. The film shows us a dysfunctional family of cannibals that slaughter a bunch of people, thats all you need to know, there were some really lame acting from the cast but it was enjoyable to a certain point.

This has to be one of the worst movies I have ever had the displeasure of seeing. The gore to which others have referred is highly unrealistic, cheap, and poorly done; and I am just scratching the surface. I would make a reference to the acting if such existed in this waste of time; so let me just say that the line reading was horrible (No! Incompetent sounds more accurate). The story (uhm, let me try again; I did not mean to be misleading by suggesting there was actually a story here). The lack of a story is about a cannibalistic family that sells leather goods (human skin) out of their van. The van breaks down and they are invited to stay at the home of the mechanic fixing their van while it is in the shop (mechanics union article 1525: when approached by a one-eyed woman in a wheelchair and two incestuous humping siblings, you are obligated to invite them to stay in your home). There is a next-door neighbor, an ex-cop, who is suspicious of the family (they kill people on the front lawn in broad daylight and he is just 'suspicious'; no wonder he is an ex-cop). That covers about as much plot as you will find in this piece of s**t yawner jokingly called a movie. It is a damn shame that Fangoria would rave about crap like this just because it contains gore, irregardless of whether it is any good. Now, let me tell how I really feel about this movie (: Bob

this film as gore filled as you could expect from the title is shameful, i have never witnessed such poor acting, lack of storyline and over embelishment of fake blood. The main characters are as wooden as well, wood! all in all the £4 i paid to rent it was wasted, if your looking for blood and gore this is your film but if you want something that resembles a storyline you're better off reading a book, i still cant believe i sat through the whole thing.

Jackson's the corporate sponsor who chooses the worst time for an Aquatica tour; and rapper LL Cool J is nicely cast as Aquatica's cook and comic relief. Michael Rapaport, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Stellan Skarsgård round out the cast, most of whom are turned into shark food as the makos turn Aquatica into a floating junkyard. Harlin takes devilish pleasure in providing sudden, unexpected shocks--no small feat in such a derivative thriller--and as a series of action set-pieces, Deep Blue Sea never disappoints. It's inevitable that Burrows should end up in her underwear like Sigourney Weaver in Alien, but even then the movie offers a credible reason for the strip-down; that Deep Blue Sea can be simultaneously ridiculous and sensible is just another one of its shlocky charms. --Jeff Shannon

Deep Blue Sea is a decent shark movie. The acting is fair but nothing special. The appearance of Samuel L. Jackson is fun. The sharks look pretty good. The script itself s around the fact that these sharks are being genetically altered in order to do some pharmaceutical research. As with all man-toys-with-nature movies, things go haywire and catastrophe strikes. L.L. Cool J plays the cook onboard the shark research station in the middle of the ocean. His character is likable and adds some good comedic lines to the script. Definitely not an Oscar quality film, but a decent action flick for the shark fan to watch. The only shark movies better than this are the first two Jaws films. If you're a shark fan, definitely give it a watch. If you're an action fan, probably give it a watch. If you're not into action or sharks, there's nothing else here to enjoy.

While this movie had the same old storyline as every other creature feature, it had quite a bit going for it. First of all, the animatronic sharks looked so real it was incredible (I wish I could say the same for the CGI sharks...). Secondly, it was very well-acted. I especially liked L.L. Cool J in this film. Third, the main theme score was just down right creepy! There were a lot of creepy scenes that were enhanced by the music, one of which being the shaft scene. This movie was good, but it did have some drawbacks: Samuel L. Jackson and the ending. I won't give away the latter, but trust me, it sucked. As for Mr. Jackson, I never liked him much, and I think he's a horrible actor altogether. Overall, the film was an entertaining, and thrilling adventure film - you can't go wrong with "Deep Blue Sea".

I purchased this DVD from Amazon, curious about what the movie would be like. When I watched it, I found it to be very good. The theme of the movie is based on a laboratory located out at sea in a old prison. The workers of the lab find themselves getting in trouble with shark activity.

I won't say any more than this because I don't want to ruin the movie for those who haven't seen it yet.

The movie is rated `R' and runs 105 minutes long. The cast of actors include Thomas Jane, LL Cool J, Michael Rapaport, Stellan Skarsgard and Samuel L Jackson. The movie is brought to us by Warner brothers, so you know its good.

I'm glad I added this one to my collection.

the key to watching this movie is to understand its true nature. you might be tempted to watch this as a cautionary tale about the dangers of playing God, perhaps expecting Frankenstein, or Gattaca. you may also be tempted to watch this as a summer popcorn flick: big scary sharks, girl who must undress to kill said sharks, rapper/actor as shark fodder, etc. neither of these approaches is correct. you will be disappointed (thus, the various one-star reviews). you must watch this movie understanding that this is the GREATEST BAD MOVIE YOU WILL EVER WATCH. it's as if Ingmar Bergman undertook to make a porno, but decided to explore the bad qualities of the genre, instead of elevating it (like Spielberg has done for various genres). therefore, this movie is a careful meditation on really bad action films. it's ridiculous. but oh so well-crafted. there is whimsy. there is suspense. it is too clever to actually be this stupid. so you wink along and enjoy it. from the beginning it is perfectly pitched, pretending as if it were in fact a summer action movie. until Samuel L. Jackson's big scene. you know of what i speak. at that point, one is put on clear notice that this is not merely a by-the-numbers summer action movie. this is an absurd farce. but a really clever one. at that point, all bets are off. sharks move up, down, and backwards like fighter jets. helicopters are not safe from these things. the sharks actually have motivation. they are fighting for their freedom, like Che Guevera. Sharke Libre!! as for the poor humans, it is eminently obvious who will survive. but at the end, the film is like PSYCHE, B!T@H&5!! it is, at this juncture, also a pointed commentary about assuming the fate of the black guy. you ponder who the racist summer-shark-movie-watcher might be, and you look in the mirror and realize....it is I.

The movie delivers plenty of action to keep you entertained and a fairly good story to go along with it. This movie is stylish, humorous, and action-packed.

The plot of this movie is absolutely tired, but Harlin's over-the-top, go-for-broke direction, and the chemistry between Geena Davis, and Samuel L. Jackson ( who is simply hilarious in this film ) turn what should have been a run of the mill actioner into a hyperbolic, funfest. THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT is more than just a little fun to watch, and describing Davis as a Sigourney Weaver wanna-be is more than a little simplistic. It's fun to see a kick-ass woman protagonist who can dish out some great one-liners, and blow the bad guys away with the same aplomb as Clint, or Bruce- or Arnold for that matter. On top of that, Craig Bierko made one loathsome, but fun-to-hate villain. I fully admit that this movie is a 'guilty pleasure,' and I'm quite guilty of loving it.

The Long Kiss Goodnight still stands -- after all these years -- as one of my all-time favorite action films. It has the perfect balance of close-up action, big special effects, comedic interludes, crisp writing, and human drama. It's important to bear in mind that this film was made before the spy-with-amnesia plot had become overused, before Samuel L. Jackson's on-screen persona had become stereotyped, before women had been legitimized as action heroes, and before anyone else (that I can think of) had tried a male-female "buddy" movie! The principle characters are all multidimensional, athough the villains are a bit clicheed. But, in the process of delivering an outstanding action movie, Samantha/Charly (Geena Davis) and Mitch (Samuel L. Jackson) must each face and resolve a number of down-to-earth issues about their lives, role identities, and personal character -- the kind we all eventually face, and which give this movie a humanity that's rare in the action/buddy genre.

Unfortunately, myopic critics panned the film, so it didn't produce well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel. But, don't let its relative obscurity rob you of the opportunity to enjoy this trendsetting gem!

As a long time Poison fan, this two-star rating pains me. Especially since one of the stars is for the amount of time Bret spent with his shirt off. Very nice. Anyway, the other star is for the somewhat interesting story. With the amount of time it took Bret to finish this movie (I remember hearing about it back in the late 80's), you'd think he would have done a minimal amount of legal research? A lot of this is just poorly researched nonsense. Like a story written by a kid in junior high who has no access to books or the internet, and just imagines what it must be like to be on death row. The movie attempts a Big Twist! at the end, but really didn't make any sense. I managed to watch it all the way through, so I guess it wasn't that bad. Except for the Sheens, the acting is just as bad as you suspect.

An unusual yet unexpectedly entertaining television mystery series, The Racing Game DVD collection includes all six episodes from a 1980 British production inspired by Dick Francis's novel Odds Against. Francis himself wrote an adapted scenario based on the story of Sid Halley (Mike Gwilym), a champion jockey whose hand--and career--are destroyed during a racing accident. Lost in a deep funk, Halley is eventually drawn out by a string of suspicious accidents at the track. Soon he's investigating criminal connections to a sadistic, wealthy couple and inventing himself anew as a private gumshoe.

The remaining five episodes are original tales, sketched out by Francis and set in the surprisingly cutthroat world of racing. "Trackdown" finds Sid and his comic-relief sidekick, Chico Barnes (Mick Ford), looking into evidence of race fixing, blackmail, and murder. In "Gambling Lady," the crime-fighting partners seek a link between a champion horse's road accident and a beautiful woman's sizable bets on a mediocre mare.

The Racing Game has a slippery, hurried look and feel, and its nominal star (Gwilym) is rather lifeless on screen. Yet these shows quickly develop an unmistakable, infectious swagger and humor. Certain motifs, such as Halley's wrecked hand and vise-like prosthetic, have a slightly surreal touch. Supporting actor Ford adds crucial energy, and the many exterior shots of the racing milieu can be fun to watch. This series may not be an unqualified winner, but it certainly does place in the mystery stakes. --Tom Keogh

"Just go for it! Stories are a lot of fun" 2007-05-30

I have the VHS versions; The Racing Game is one of my favorite series. Despite the technical imperfections, the story lines are excellent. Odds Against describes how Sid Halley lost his hand while going up against the villains. My favorites are Trackdown and Gambling Lady (stories 2 and 3 on tape 1). You really get a feel for the horsey set -- from breeder and owners to gamblers and even the stable lads. The accents are right (from posh to Cockney), clothing immediately lets you know who the characters are and their social standing (well cut for Halley while Chico doesn't quite get it, the vet wears tattersall shirts and corderoy jackets; the gamblers have their field glasses and tags, the toughs are shaggy maned and wear pinstriped shirts and big ties!) And you learn a bit about equine medicine. It's well worth hunting out the VHS tapes! (And read the books!)

I had vague memories of enjoying this series on TV when it was originally released on TV. Having ordered this item from another supplier (only to be told it was unavailable) I ordered from Amazon. I waited for nearly two months it to arrive in the UK - why can't we buy UK produced drama on region 2 DVDs in the UK ??? I will never understand why most British stuff is released in the US and not in the UK. (End of whinge)

The story lines are quite good - but a little too short to have the complexity of Dick Francis's books.

Sid Halley seems to be a dominant figure in Francis's writing but in fact there were only a couple of books based on the character and his side kick Chico. The rest of the series is based on story ideas from Dick Francis and he acted as consultant to the series.

Halley is quite understated in the books and this is, if anything, over done in the series where he seems so detached from the world around him that he can be difficult to engage with as a character.

Chico is quite well portrayed but don't expect any stunning judo based fight scenes as the limited violence in the series is pretty poorly done (it reminded me slightly of fight scenes in school plays where teachers are very keen not to get prosecuted for injuries caused).

All that said the stories are still worth watching.

The big problem with the series however is the picture and sound quality. The picture is generally below par - grainy, washed out in places and showing its age. Imagine a worn out VHS tape and you won't be too far off.

The picture, however, is superb compared to the sound quality. One of the episodes is completely unwatchable unless you can lip read! The sound quality really is that bad on that one episode - sounding like the whole thing is tranmitted through a bucket of muddy water. The other episodes are merely poor (but at least you can hear what the characters are saying).

I can understand that the studio wanted to release this series but they could have done something about the sound (there must be a better quality copy somewhere in the world to transfer from) or at acknowledge the problem and provide subtitles on the really bad episode.

It deserves more than 2 stars but the sound alone couldn't warrant any more.

"Completely true to the feel of Dick Francis." 2003-03-13

This series is, like a lot of '70s British television, short on technical glamor, and long on getting an adaptation absolutely true in spirit to the original, with an added fillip of its own. In this case, the performance of Mike Gwilym, who did such a good job that Francis was inspired to write a second Halley novel [Whip Hand] and dedicated it to Gwilym and the producer of this series. His tough-but-brilliant Sid is the best you'll ever see. If you're a Francis fan, you need this DVD.

The DVDs do the best they can with unrestored source material. You will see film grain, scratches, hairs, etc. But the digital translation has remained as faithful as possible, with the datarate peaking into the 9s frequently (there are three episodes per disc). The colors are bright, and artifacts are not present. The extras aren't. But each episode has 10 chapter stops in all the logical places, and, glory allelu, each episode intelligently inhabits a title (i.e., episode 1 is Title 1, episode 2 is Title 2, etc.) No frills, but no compromises, either.

The quality of the sound is so bad that it often is difficult to follow the dialogue. Color often is quite faded in parts. The six mysteries are not bad. Of interest to Dick Francis fans, but still a disappointment.

You wouldn't know it by watching the Batman movies they collaborated on, but this smart adaptation of John Grisham's novel proves that director Joel Schumacher and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman have some talent when the right project comes along. Old ways die hard... and even now in the fast-changing American South, some old ways die harder than others. It's the lesson learned by Carl Lee Hailey, a Mississippi factory worker, when his ten-year-old daughter is brutally assaulted by two racist thugs on a drunken spree. A Time to Kill is an incredible movie and probably in my opinion is Schumacher's best. McConaughey and Jackson deliver some of their best performances in this movie. A great movie to watch and enjoy.

Although it eventually runs out of smart ideas and resorts to a typically explosive finale, this above-average thriller rises above its formulaic limitations on the strength of powerful performances by Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. Both play Chicago police negotiators with hotshot reputations, but when Jackson's character finds himself falsely accused of embezzling funds from a police pension fund, he's so thoroughly framed that he must take extreme measures to prove his innocence. He takes hostages in police headquarters to buy time and plan his strategy, demanding that Spacey be brought in to mediate with him as an army of cops threatens to attack, and a media circus ensues. Both negotiators know how to get into the other man's thoughts, and this intellectual showdown allows both Spacey and Jackson to ignite the screen with a burst of volatile intensity. Director F. Gary Gray is disadvantaged by an otherwise predictable screenplay, but he has a knack for building suspense and is generous to a fine supporting cast, including Paul Giamatti as one of Jackson's high-strung hostages, and the late J.T. Walsh in what would sadly be his final big-screen role. The movie should have trusted its compelling characters a little more, probing their psyches more intensely to give the suspense a deeper dramatic foundation, but it's good enough to give two great actors a chance to strut their stuff. --Jeff Shannon

An outstanding performances by both Samuel Janckson and Kevin Spacey. This movie is a touching story, and the will to go on. No matter how deep you're into trouble. Sam would do anything to prove he's innocent. Love it.

Samuel L. Jackson has become quite adept at portraying intense characters who are both likeable and bothersome. His cop in "The Negotiator" is a desperate man, who although perhaps innocent of the charges against him is certainly capable of having done them. By taking hostages, he automatically guarantees himself prison time even if he is exonerated of the murder charges against him, and yet this character cannot help but be likeable and sympathetic in Jackson's hands. Kevin Spacey's negotiator is both arrogant and clever, and the climax of the film shows his expertise at both negotiation and deception. A good suspenseful action film, with Jackson at times over the top but always in charge.

Great action films are like great actors, just as bad ones are like bad actors. Great action films are not about good and bad guys, but complex charactors who both want something.

The Negotiator is perfect for both Kevin Spacey and Samual L Jackson, two of our best actors. Every great actor has to answer one question about his charactor: what do I want? Here, Jackson wants to clear his name, and Spacey wants to retrieve hostages Jackson holds. This sets the conflict in bare bones terms as only the action genre can. The actors have room to develop their charactors.

Both charactors are decent, smart men, put in unthinkable circumstances, two hostage experts matching the sharpest of minds. There is plenty of action, but most of the tension comes from the mental game Spacey and Jackson are playing. The mental game played with A LOT of guns around. It is what MIGHT go wrong that makes the film so frightening. How far will these guys go? Are they going to outsmart the other into a bloodbath?

Jackson's motives are obvious, but the movie does not explain why Spacey allies with him by films end and goes to the lengths he does.

Still, this is a great film from a genre bad actors exploit too much and great actors don't exploit enough.

Steven Seagal needed a new approach to his standard head-busting heroics, so he teamed up with Keenen Ivory Wayans for this routine 1996 action flick. This time stone-faced Steve plays Los Angeles homicide detective Jack Cole, newly transplanted from New York and teamed up with Jim Campbell (Wayans). They're assigned to track down "The Family Man," a serial killer who earned his nickname by crucifying entire families and leaving religious graffiti as his calling card. The case heats up when the latest victim turns out to be Cole's ex-wife, and Cole is considered a primary suspect. That makes Seagal get really mad--you don't wanna get Seagal too upset, y'know--but he still has time to quote Buddhist wisdom and crack wise with Wayans, who plays it relatively straight as the practical half of this partnership. It's typical Seagal stuff all the way, with obligatory fight scenes every 10 minutes or so, but Seagal fans will enjoy it, and Brian Cox makes a suitably hissable villain. --Jeff Shannon

This week's feature has been on Sid's to do list for a very very long time and thanks to On demand at the North Pole North we were able to witness the greatest onscreen chemistry since Brett Q and the adolecesant boys he "coached" at a High School in Hicksville, Mississippi. You thought Sid was going with Swayze and McQueen there didn't you? No. They will never be approached. How dare you even think that? So it was with great anticipation that we viewed The Glimmer Man and it did not disapoint.

Seagal plays a former government operative with a checkered past turned New York Buddhist cop. Oh yeah oh yeah. He is teamed up with Keenan Ivory Wayans( he was available?) to take down a sadistic serial killer. This flick was actually made in 1996 but it had a 1991ish look. That's a couple of stars right there. The only thing that was missing out of the Seagal formula in this one was he wasn't his normal studly self. There was no Seagal love interest that would have undoubedly laughed him out of her trailer on set. Oh wait that happened with Nikki Cox anyway.

Sid really can't quantify how good this flick was. There were parts that were ridiculously enjoyable. But the flick got overwhelmed by copious ammounts of football talk and predictions. Dolphins stay really good, the Pack get a lot better, and Brett Favre gets what's coming to him if you're wondering. Ok let's wrap it up with a quick drive-in totals:

"A Glimmer Of Hope? Maybe Not." 2008-09-14

With "Under Siege 2" behind him, Seagal's descent was under way by the time "The Glimmer Man" came to be. Without exaggeration, this is probably our hero's most narcicistic film before his repetitious DTV outings, and one of his lazier productions overall: storyline? - reworked from "Se7en"; action? - same ol', same ol'; supporting cast? - decent, but who cares since Seagal's the star?

Okay, maybe I'm being a bit harsh, since this movie is far removed from Seagal's worst offerings, but when it comes to his theatrical releases, this shouldn't be your choice to introduce yourself or a friend to the aikido master.

Seagal plays Jack Cole, a new age detective transfered to the west coast to aid the investigation of a brutal serial killer called "the Family Man". Finding a reluctant partner in Lt. Jim Campbell (Keenan Ivory Wayans), the pair must work their way through the killer's web of religious and political motives...before discovering that there may be more than killer, and more than one cause to the slayings.

If Steven Seagal knows anything, it's how to toot his own horn: aside from being an unbeatable fighting machine (" ...like Bruce Lee, even better") and a philosophy-spouting guru, he regularly outdoes his partner in the humor department. Apparently Wayans - who penned totally un-funny material like "In Living Color" and directed laughless films like "Scary Movie" - is comedically challenged in this movie, becoming Seagal's whipping boy by being tricked into eating powdered deer penis and routinely being shown up by "Mister Laughs" Seagal.

Forgive me for being upset with my hero, but this is probably him at his self-serving best: his will to dominate Wayans and make a fool of him erases the entire premise of a buddy-cop picture.

Then again, Seagal can't take the blame for the entire bad show: the acting of co-star Wayans and bad-guys Bob Gunton ("Patch Adams"), Brian Cox ("Troy"), and John M. Jackson ("J.A.G.") falls into the "ho-hum" and "blah" categories. The baddies are less threatening than they are fat, old, and slightly gaydar-alerting (sharing pools, drinks, and bathrobes? Hmm...). And the fight choreographer apparently only had Seagal's previous movies to use as reference, since there's absolutely nothing new to be found here (believe it, Wayans actually has the best fight of the film).

In the film's defense, the showdown in the church is probably the most tense scene Seagal as ever acted in (not saying much). His wardrobe is good for a laugh. Though dull, the five fights are sound and feature the level of violence we've come to expect from Seagal - iron spike through the head, anyone? And overall, the film has the production values to keep it from looking sloppy.

Simply, if you managed to put up with the likes of "On Deadly Ground" and "Fire Down Below", watching "Glimmer Man" shouldn't be too tough...but watch it with a hotdog in-hand, so you've got something to divert your attention to when Steven gets preachy.

"Segal's first foray into the buddy genre" 2008-09-07

The Glimmer Man is Steven Segal's first forary into a buddy movie. Kennan Ivory Wayana gives some good one liners in the film and he even gets beat up a few times. The film has some nice action sequences and some chemsitry between Segal and Wayans. I give *** out of ****.

I guess Seagal wanted to be a little like Eastwood here; giving a more forensic approach to his movies, a little twist here and there...and why not a little of Seagal's special recipe of bone crushing formula, it wont due any harm...right?..Wrong, this movie is the perfect example of Segal's downfall from stardom. Since Seagal isn't as thin or as fast as he used to be, he needs a co-star to have a little more screen time so Seagal can catch his breath and eat little more doughnuts. Seriously Seagal hit top bottom after this, with the exception of Fire Down Below and Exit Wounds, all of Segal's future movies following that sucked.

In Glimmer Man Seagal plays Jack Cole, an Ex government intelligence operative known as "The Glimmer Man," because he could move so quickly and quietly that his victims would only see a glimmer before they died. in fact that is so BS, Segal moves slower than his previous movies here, his gut is beginning to grow and his acting is stale and wooden. anyhow back to the movie, Cole is assigned to work with An L.A. police detective named Jim Campbell (Keenen Ivory Wayans) they are both on the look for a serial killer known as the "Family Man" he is given that name because...well he kills families; and aside from killing them he tortures and crucifies them after their deaths. After a string of murders the killer gets personal, he kills Coles wife..and you know what that means...that's right...its payback time, but it seems that this killings are beginning to get weird, there is a copycat making the murders look like "the Family Man"....now the question is Who is the killer, the "family man or the copycat?

Along with these psychos we have a local crime boss doing dealings with the Russians, somehow its all connected and don't expect a clever twist because there really isn't. I give them credit for adding some suspense here and there, but Segal doesn't belong in this movie, he feels out of place. The only good actors in this movie are Keenen Ivory Wayans and Brian Cox. So yeah, rent it or wait for it to be shown on cable, but don't buy it, not worth it.

Quincy Jones comes to talk with Charlie Rose about a new autobiographical album. He is seventy- years and the book he says, has two pages for each year. He had published a previous autobiography and this looks more like a commemorative picture- book celebratory work. Jones talks about his being orphaned early,his admiration for his polylingual real mother, his problematic relationship with his step-mother, his supportive father who was a carpenter for the 'Chicago black Mob ' of that day, the Jones Brothers.He talks about his meeting Ray Charles when they were both in their teens and learning much about arranging from him. He also talks about his later work, work he most loved with Count Basie and Sinatra. He is a world- traveler, an ambassador of U.S. culture to the world. He says the doctors of the Swedish Institute with which he has connected gave him the formula , of 'Love, live, laugh, give' as way of keeping in good health. Jones is upbeat in talking about the Obama Presidency, and about his own future projects. He also advocates a Ministry of the Arts and Culture for the United States. A man of great accomplishment and one skilled not only in playing the trumpet but also in blowing his own horn.

In the Auto- Bailout segment we learn the Bush Administration has taken it upon itself, now that the Congress has refused to go along with the bailout plan, to provide the funds which would prevent the Industry from having to file Chapter 11. Then the future would be open to meeting the test of competition through among other things creating new fuel- efficient attractive models.

Father Vassey (Michael Rooker) has a problem. Using his two 9mm, laser-sighted cannons he's tracked down and killed the holders of a heretic ceremony meant to bring a demon into the world. The demon has manifested, escaped, and is now on the hunt for the soul of a young boy who is believed to be a saint, due to the stigmata he had at birth. The film is directed by Jamie Dixon, heretofore a special effects supervisor, who shows canny restraint where special effects are concerned. The shadowy demon of the title is depicted often by a fluid black cloud, which is functional without losing its eeriness or credibility. The acting is solid, never campy, though Michael Rooker sometimes feels out of place. And the climactic scenes, built up to with good pacing, are fraught with peril and excitement. All in all, this is a worthwhile effort for a first-time director, and that makes it one of the best direct-to-video releases I've seen in quite a long time. Although I wish I could locate the Bram Stoker story on which it is based. --Jim Gay

Bad effects and storyline. Liked some of the characters including the female vet. Why is it that all professional women, not doctors or lawyers, are vets? Tony Todd has a fun but minor role in the movie. Different from many of the roles he has. Rent it cheaply. Don't buy.

"Disappointing In-Name-Only Bram Stoker Adaptation" 2008-03-23

"Shadow Builder" starts with a typical situation involving a religious cult sect and their secret ritual to summon a demon. Gun-wielding "Father" Vassey (Michael Rooker) attempts to stop them, but fails, and the summoned demon seeks the soul of a boy named Chris (Kevin Zegers) living in a small town where the evil begins to wreck havoc on unsuspecting townspeople.

The film is loosely based on Bram Stoker's little-known short story of the same name (included in his book "Under the Sunset," Stoker's earlier work published in 1881). It is a kind of allegorical fantasy, not a tale of horror. The filmmakers are clearly trying to cash in on the name of the author of "Dracula," and most of the film's content has nothing to do with the original.

Actually "Shadow Builder" borrows a lot from other films of the same genre - the evil hiding in the dark, the evil entity getting stronger and the good guys using light as weapon to fight, etc - but borrowing is not always a bad thing. The problem of "Shadow Builder" is it is neither scary as horror, nor exiting as thriller. The story develops too slowly and each scare or action is rather tame. Effects are decent, but the story fails to maintain interest in the middle of the film.

Strong acting from underrated Michael Rooker and special appearance from Tony Todd is not enough for us to keep interested in the film, Its flat storytelling has ruined the potential of the material of the film, which could have been as entertaining as such so-so films as "End of Days."

"DVD is iffy. Movie is JUST ok." 2007-08-11

For a "B" level budget horror flick, the movie's not bad. Going against the current stereotype of Catholic priests, the man of the cloth in this film is a grizzled veteran comfortable with his fists, who protects the boy put under his protection. The demon has some good lines. For a horror movie, it's not bad.

The DVD's iffy. It wouldn't work on one of my newer DVD players, but it DID work on an older player. I suspect this is due to the DVD not being mastered properly. A symptom and a sign of a budget production. No, it's not because the DVD is dirty and needs cleaning. I ordered a replacement copy from Netflix before concluding that the DVD was improperly mastered.

"Not too bad for a B horror film" 2004-07-20

This is based on a Bram Stoker story, and I'd love to see the story. Surely his story didn't include electricity, generators, police cars, guns - well, of course it didn't. It couldn't have.

But this is, all in all, a pretty good horror film. There aren't really any points in the film where I'm terrified, but the story line remains solid throughout the film. My main complaints are the casting of Michael Rooker as a priest (even if he has a troubled past), and the special effects - which somehow won an award from an obscure award ceremony, Fantafestival. The Shadowbuilder himself really wasn't all that convincing.

Still, this was a horror film that began and ended with the same premise. It didn't deviate, and its characters didn't commit random acts of remarkable stupidity. It was a wholly believable story (in terms of being a movie, of course), and Kevin Zegers gave a good performance as the 12 year old that the Shadowbuilder wanted to possess.

One other complaint that I have - if Zegers's character is supposed to be this special person (I'll let the film explain why he is), why didn't he exhibit any special traits?

By the way, neither the DVD cover that Amazon has as its image, nor the actual cover that I received when I ordered it, has anything to do with the movie. Poor packaging, even though the cover I received was "cool". The one Amazon has depicts a blonde boy. Last I checked, and for his entire career, Zegers has been a brunette.

The eight episodes on Set 2 dabble in darker themes than the shows in the more playful Set 1: the coercion of a defector to return ("The Professionals"), the destabilization of a Latin American government ("Whatever Happened to George Foster"), and a conspiracy surrounding an attempted coup on the eve of elections in an African nation ("The Galloping Major"). For Prisoner fans, however, the highlight is easily "The Colony." This spy school behind the Iron Curtain has a twist: it's an exact replica of a British town with captive citizens. In this episode you can see the inspiration for "Your Village" (as well as an unusually ambivalent conclusion). The spy game is no longer lighthearted gentleman's sport. Also features the episodes "A Date With Doris," "The Mirror's New," "It's Up to the Lady," and "The Colonel's Daughter."

The uncut episodes feature the complete British versions, with the Danger Man title and bouncy spinet theme song. One of the episodes in this Dangerman, Set 2, is "the Colonel's Daughter." Major Khan of the Delhi Police Department wants John Drake's help in locating a retired British Army colonel who has chosen to remain behind in India after its independence. "Flotsam of the British Raj," Khan scoffs.

"You're not still chasing the poor old Imperialists, are you?" Drake protests.

When Drake wants to know why he should find the British colonel, Khan sneers, "Fellow white man, and all that."

"The Colonel's Daughter" is a story of two hardened intelligence officers doing their work in a changing geopolitical environment. Its hard-edged realism doesn't disappoint.

"Whatever happened to George Foster" is arguably the best in the entire series.

In "Colony Three," Drake has to penetrate a spy training school located in the mock-up of a British village in far-off Siberia. Patrick McGoohan's ability to assume the role of a file clerk is remarkable.

"Good Set. Fun for the whole Family." 2002-09-03

There are eight episodes on this DVD, of seeming various length. They're certainly entertaining, in black & white, which is part of the charm. McGoohan himself is very appealing and fun to watch. The sets are a bit cheesy, and recycled. The hotel in one episode, is, with minor alterations, the hospital in the next and the German apartment complex in the next. The plots don't really make much sense if you think about them for more than five seconds. The third world episodes all seem to be set in Banana Republic #43. But the visuals are fun, from footage, some stock, some not, of London and Paris, and make-up and fashion styles of the sixties, complete with the occasional semi-fashionable thug. And of course, there's the obligatory set of fisticuffs almost every episode. But the atmosphere is nicely paranoid, and, somehow, John Drake, the hero, emerges as slightly less adolescent than his main screen rival. There are some "upsetting" or "ambiguous" endings, though Drake seems more invigorated than drained by the paranoia. And there's funny dialogue like when an adorable Latin American Minister of Culture, a babe in uniform, says "I have read all of your great writers, your Shakespeare, your Dickens, your Upton Sinclair." I wouldn't exactly call this show intelligent, but it is very entertaining, and, by today's standards, remarkably wholesome. And, yes, the episode 'Colony Three' is certainly a precursor to the Prisoner. But Danger Man stands on its own merits.

"Danger Man Set 2: The plots need some work..." 2002-04-01

Patrick McGoohan is back as British secret agent John Drake in further episodes of Danger Man. Here are summaries and/or comments for the episodes in this set. Episode ratings are on a scale from one to five (best).

Volume 3: (Disc 1)

The Professionals (3): An agent in Prague has suddenly vanished. John Drake arrives in Prague, posing as a member of the embassy staff, his mission is to locate the missing man. Very quickly he is taken in, and compromised by a crafty operative, and his lovely accomplice. Drawn into their trap, Drake learns the fate of the missing man, and then takes steps to save him before it is too late.

A Date With Doris (2): Drake is in an unspecified Latin American location to extract an agent in jeopardy, and then rendezvous with the submarine "Doris". His cover is as a reporter sent to interview a prominent General. Things just do not go smoothly for Drake, and he always seems off balance. He barely concludes this messy affair, and is only successful because of luck, and some very fortuitous assistance. He is also guilty of a major error, when he foolishly allows himself to be followed to his "safe house". Count yourself lucky this time, John.

The Mirror's New (3): This one keeps you guessing. Edmund Bearce, a member of the British Embassy staff, chooses murder as a way to cancel a personal debt. Preparing to dispose of the body, he has an accident, and is knocked unconscious. Upon waking, he has a dead body on his hands, and a lost day to account for. Bearce reappears, but can't explain what happened. A suspicious Drake investigates and uncovers a secret life, and much more.

Colony Three (5): Easily the most thought provoking episode on the disc. The plot is similar to an episode of "The Prisoner" or "The Avengers", skirting the edges of credibility. Drake takes the place of a communist sympathizer, just prior to his defection to the Soviets. After arriving in Soviet territory, Drake and two other defectors take a long train ride to a secret location. They arrive at a place named "Hamden", also known as the "village" (sound familiar?). The phony English town is actually a training ground where Soviet agents learn to assimilate into British culture. Drake penetrates security, gathers as much information as he can, and then it is time to leave. This one has a bit of everything, torture, gadgets, death and a tragic end.

Volume 4: (Disc 2)

It's Up To the Lady (2): Sometimes Drake is just not on his game, and this is one of those times. A British diplomat intending to defect vanishes. A rendezvous with his wife (Sylvia Syms), will take place in Greece, near the Albanian border. Drake is on the scene, to try and get the wayward diplomat to return to Britain. Underestimating the local opposition, he is nearly drowned, loses his charges, and carelessly gets himself shot. Topping it all off, he learns once again what it is like to be a pawn in the game.

What Ever Happened to George Foster? (3): Bernard Lee ("M" from the Bond films) guest stars, as Lord Ammandford, a wealthy industrialist who seeks to destabilize the government of a fictitious South American country. In addition, the Lord is a man interested in keeping a mysterious past a secret from a probing John Drake. This is more of a straight detective story.

The Galloping Major (2): Sent to Africa, at the request of the President (Henry Marshall) of an unnamed country, Drake finds himself the pawn in a political power struggle. Makes interesting viewing in light of historical events, but not a great story.

The Colonel's Daughter (4): In India, classified information is being leaked to the enemy. Drake is looking into the activities of a butterfly collecting Colonel, and his daughter, living in a house in the country. Soon, Drake is up a tree, in the middle of the jungle, maintaining surveillance. Later, he uncharacteristically emerges victorious in a three on one brawl, on his way to uncovering those involved in the secret pipeline. Drake finds that the Colonel's daughter is definitely Daddy's girl.

Writing is critical to a good story, and some of the plots of these international exploits just do not quite pass muster. Drake is simply not at his best, making some near fatal mistakes. Perhaps being an operative largely on his own in a foreign land, puts Drake at too much of a disadvantage. He doesn't quite have the fire we have seen before. A few good episodes, but not enough for a ringing endorsement of this set. Give A&E positive marks for addressing a previous complaint, by upgrading to four episodes per disc. Fans of Danger Man, may find my other reviews of interest.

"Depressing reminder of when television was intelligent" 2002-03-25

Watching these 35-year-old shows is a disturbing revelation at how television today has gotten even MORE dumbed-down than when it was referred to as the "vast wasteland". ALL of these shows have interesting characters, exotic locales (from Africa to Greece, South America to behind the Iron Curtain), and PLOT. Compared to "Man From U.N.C.L.E", this is Nobel Prize material! Each 50-minute show has more PLOT than most 2-hour movies foisted on us these days.

As noted above, probably of greatest interest to McGoohan fans will be the episode "The Colony", as the origins of "The Village" are plain for all to see. However, my favorite has to be "What Happened to George Foster", where McGoohan's Drake takes on a millionaire Lord (played by Bernard Lee, no less!) and risks his career, not to mention his life, in a private vendetta that foreshadows #6's battles with the assorted #2's of "The Prisoner".

This is certainly not light-hearted "Avengers"-style material. McGoohan gets roughed up in just about every episode, and there aren't any charming eccentrics or snappy gadgets. But it is nearly incredible that such high quality LeCarre-like material was shown on a weekly basis. Truely, it was a Golden Age.

"Gritty British Spy Drama" 2002-03-06

Not as cerebral as "The Prisoner", nor nearly as simplistic as James Bond, Man from U.N.C.L.E., or any of the dozens of spy shows that were popular in the late sixties, "Danger Man" (Secret Agent in the U.S.) is a fine example of how British drama is often more subtle and ambiguous than anything you're likely to see on American TV.

Modern viewers may scratch their heads, wondering why this show was so wildly popular. At its worst, the pacing is glacial, the narrative larded with long chunks of exposition. At its best, this is chilling, thought provoking drama with plenty of gray areas, reminiscent of the Le Carre adaptions (Tinker, Tailor, etc.) that were produced in the 70s and 80s. These shows are surprisingly cerebral for a TV series; while some episodes are too deliberately paced to work as thrillers, McGoohan is always worth watching, the black and white DVD transfers are gorgeous, and the endings are often startling.

If you're not a McGoohan fan, you'll probably find "The Prisoner" more accessible. If you've already discovered "The Prisoner", and enjoy John Le Carre-style gritty, realistic espionage stories, give this box a try. (The episodes in Volume 2 are generally more absorbing and darker than those included in the first DVD set.)

Though there is argument what the best time of Miami Vice was, there is no disputing the first two seasons were the "classic" vice everyone has come to know any love. The style was the most prevalant here, and the characaters in true form. Also, the songs usually associated with the show were found in these seasons as well. The show was great and really entertaining. If you're looking to remember the classic vice, these two seasons will give you your fill.

Great set. The 2 hour pilot episode was as riveting now as when it originally aired. Although certain aspects have aged (ie music, fashion) the action and plot withstand the test of time. I am amazed at some of the subject matter that was able to get on prime time air when it did (pornography rings, drug smuggling, etc) and in such detail and realism. But this is essential to Michael Mann's modus operandi. If you are a true Michael Mann and Vice fan, this set is something you won't be able to do without (and in crisp, DVD resolution!) If you are not, well you might just think it's a relic of the 80s.

My husband and I loved this programme when it first aired in the U.K. back in the early 80's. It went out on a Monday night at 9pm and everything in the household stopped, then you talked about it all the next day with your workmates. I was devasted when Crocketts wife played by Sheena Easton got murdered. I purchased this double DVD as a suprise gift for my husband and he loves it, has watched it over and over again, I think he's reliving his youth. Can't wait for the others to follow

"Contact" having long been a favorite of mine, and Sharon Stone and Dustin Hoffman being on that list as well, I couldn't resist the combo and was not disappointed. However, for first-time dunno-how-the-2-feature DVD works, I'd have appreciated BIG RED LETTERS - TURN OVER for 2nd one. But that didn't take too long. I'm now prepared for another double feature DVD.

Both good science fiction movies. Jodi Foster and Matthew Mcconaughey are both excellent in Contact. The book was a bit better in detail, but books usually are. This book was translated to video format keeping true to the theme of the story. It seems like the ending could have been closer to the ending of the book, but I'm sure they had their reasons. Sharon Stone and Dustin Hoffman made a great team in Sphere. I like the idea of time travel, when carried out well and without the usual problems of temporal inconsistencies.

This is a good pair of niche Sci-Fi movies. I'm not going to review the films in depth, so I suggest you see Sphere and Contact for more detailed coverage.

The case includes a single DVD with Contact on the front and Sphere on the back. There is no labeling on the DVD and the packaging didn't release the DVD very easily so I felt very nervous handling it. Additionally, it was a little difficult to tell which side of the DVD was which because you had to look at small text on the inner ring of the DVD.

From what I could tell, both sides were identical to their standard non-bundled counterparts. You're just getting two on one disc.

These are pretty good movies with a little bit of a cult following (especially Sphere). The only bad thing here is the packaging.

By putting out these two films on one DVD, I can't help but feel that Warner's has "short-changed" Contact by pairing it with such an inferior film like "Sphere." In my opinion, Criterion should have issued their own DVD print of "Contact" with all of the extras. I don't even see it in upcoming Blu-Ray releases and it certainly deserves that kind of upgrade. "Contact" knocked my socks off when I first saw it. The day it came out on LaserDisc, I bought it. The DVD had many extras on it so I got rid of the LD and picked it up on DVD. It's definitely a classic 90's sci-fi film that is NOT getting the kind of treatment (like a release on Blu-Ray) that it so richly deserves. This is a step in the wrong direction...and a slap in the face for fans!!! Forget it!

"BLOODLESS VAMPIRE MOVIE" 2005-02-10

And I don't mean literally. There is a good deal of blood spilled, but the problem with FROST PORTRAIT OF A VAMPIRE starts with the title. Wouldn't it indicate that Frost was the vampire? Not! Next: the movie hops around so much you don't really have any true concept of where we are in the script. There was an attempt in originality to make the vampire an Afghanistanian (or is it Afghan?), because that means he can walk around in the daylight. (Although later on, a big faux pas: Nat, the vampire, tells Frost the vampire hunter that guns can't kill him. BUT Nat himself shot the first vampire right in the head.) Also another convenience: you don't become a vampire until you die (that could be years later). Problem: We never really know when Nat died. ACTING: Well, Charles Lister as Nat tries hard, but other than the schlocky red eyes and the blood syrup, he isn't given much to work with. Why does he like being a vampire? He was a good Catholic boy at the start of the movie; he even chomps on a priest in the confessional later. No explanation is given for that one, either. Gary Busey (once nominated for an Oscar for "Buddy Holly Story" if you can believe that one) turns in another incredibly bad performance as the blind museum curator who spins the story for us. But, lordy lordy, where did Jeff Manzanares come from? The end credits said he was the stunt coordinator for the film, too. But why was he given the lead role? Now, let's focus on the word LEAD. With a long e, it's "lead", with a short e, It's "lead," like in the mineral. And that's what this beefy jerk gives in the role of Jack Frost (really, we've had killer snowmen and Michael Keaton already take this name, why bother with it again). The climax in the graveyard is downright silly, and the ending is so predictable, one can only sigh and say I told you so.

So why 2 stars instead of one? I don't know, guess I'm just in an unusually forgiving mood. But, what could have been an interesting vampire variation, merely becomes another one of those movies you can find in the 5.50 bin at Walmart. Wait until they drop it down to 2.50.

I couldn't wait to see this movie. I went to BlockBuster to rent it and they told me it had been stolen off the shelf. I'm thinking "wow, must be a really good movie" so then I pay $14.99 to buy it. After watching the fabulously bad acting, listening to the seriously horrible sound (the actors appear to have dubbed their lines in after the film was shot) and the preposterously poor special affects I had to shut it off. I could barely watch 1/2 hour of it. It is THAT BAD. What the heck was Gary Busey thinking for God's sake?? I got suckered bad on this one, my only hope is that I can foist it off on someone else on E-bay. DO NOT BUY OR RENT THIS PILE OF CRAP!!

You know, I tend to actually *enjoy* bad movies. There's nothing like getting together with friends and poking fun at a goofy movie.

Unless it is REALLY bad--so painfully bad you can't stand to watch it.

"Frost" is of the latter variety... bad acting, boring dialog, lame plot, paltry and fake-looking CGI effects, and one halfway decent actor (Gary Busey). If you really *LOVE* vampire movies, do NOT rent this film. The basic vampire storyline is so tried and true that its hard to ruin, but Frost succeeds in ruining it royally.

If you want a shlocky vampire film that's fun to watch, try "Vampires" with James Woods.

This movie is just terrible, first the main character Frost, looks like Kevin Smith the director and we are suppose to take him serious as some bad ass special oops solider give me a break. The story has holes in it and the CGI effects makes it look cheap. For flicks like this it should be latex and nothing else. The reason I gave it a 1 is because its a good story and if handled right could have put a new spin on vamp movies. The first vampire is from the middle east so that would have been something new but they just screwed it up tooo much. if you do see this rent it don't buy.

There is very little vampirism in this film - mainly because the chief character is not the vampire, but the vampire hunter. The 'hero' looks like another Don 'the Dragon' Wilson clone.

There's not much to say about this lamely plotted film. It has a few computer graphics that are interesting - like a Russian helicopter flying around but other than that, this is a major yawn

Physical Evidence is meant to be a hard-boiled, gritty courtroom whodunit. Lies, red herrings, and double crosses follow as the body count rises. Though the pacing is brisk and there's some good courtroom melodrama, Reynolds and Russell don't exactly ignite up the screen, and most of the scenes play like bad late-night television. Physical Evidence is one of those films that you want to like but really should be a lot better than it actually is. Developed as a sequel to Jagged Edge for Glenn Close and Robert Loggia, it gives the impression that all involved only made it while they were waiting for something better to come along. The premise is perfectly serviceable, it's mostly technically efficient if horribly uninspired with even Henry Mancini's musacky score surprisingly pleasant, but you can't help feeling that things would have turned out better if one of the leads had turned out to be the killer (as is rumoured was originally the case). As the opening scene of his little-seen, personally disastrous Heat (1986) showed, Reynolds has all the makings of a great screen villain. As is, there are few surprises and a feeling of half-hearted filming by numbers as it builds up a head of intertia as it ambles disinterestedly towards a less than grand will-this-do? finale.

Reynolds is fine, sailing through on charisma in what is clearly a star vehicle. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Theresa Russell. An impressive and fearless actress in husband Nic Roeg's films which allow her to delve into the darker side of human nature, she's trapped in a part that requires star quality rather than depth, and she ain't got it in spades. She doesn't fluff her lines or bump into the other actors, but that's about all that can be said in favour of her astonishingly stilted and often amateurish performance that lets the film down badly. Aside from Ned Beatty's prosecutor the supporting cast add only a slightly surreal presence in a Boston where everyone seems to have a badly disguised Canadian accent and the streets bear a startling resemblance to Toronto and Montreal.

Likewise, director Michael Crichton, who in Westworld, Coma and The First Great Train Robbery showed that he knew how to lean an audience to the edge of their seats, seems to handle the action in a purely perfunctory fashion - indeed, in one brief chase the shots don't even match and seem thrown together almost arbitrarily. The climax itself has no flair and is completely bereft of threat or danger, and many scenes are played for far less than they are worth. It's no great surprise that, aside from uncredited reshoots on The 13th Warrior, Crichton hasn't directed since.

Its watchable enough in an 80s TV movie sort of way, even if it never lives up to the promise of its opening. Whether that's enough of a reason to buy it is down to individual taste.

"very lackluster courtroom drama" 2008-02-03

This movie does not work on any level. Ned Beatty turns in a decent performance as the prosecuting attorney, but nothing else about this movie makes any sense. The plot is convoluted and silly, the writing is poor, and Theresa Russell is beautiful but unconvincing. The role of the obviously framed cop could have been played by anyone, and Burt Reynolds phones in his performance from another planet. There is no suspense, no urgency. Reynolds doesn't seem to care that he is about to be convicted for a crime he didn't committed; for that matter, no one else does either.

What is amazing is that this totally forgettable dreck made it to DVD, whereas Russell's much better performance in "Impulse" remains only on VHS.

i have to say i think burt looks good here and is very good as the hard drinking cop,it's just that the rest of the movie is so bad that burt's acting gets lost!

a sleeze ball crook is found dead(in a most origanl way,the only other good thing in the movie) and everything points to burt. theresa russell(lost and very poor as a lawyer) takes his case and they set out to find the killer. michael crichton directs this mess with out any real fire except for the opening scenes. and yet another nail in the coffin of burt's career!!

This Rank thriller directed by Michael Crichton has a scuzzy screenplay by Bill Phillips, from a story by Phillips and Steve Ransohoff, which is half courtroom drama and half street investigation. The title is explained by the means of execution of a hood being found in the home of Burt Reynolds, a Boston cop on suspension for "unwarranted violence". In spite of the obvious setup, Reynolds is charged with the murder and Theresa Russell becomes his defence attorney. Russell is given more screentime than Reynolds, and the treatment even allows for her breathy mannerisms by making her an inexperienced and ambitious. At one point someone even tells her "I can do without the dramatics" which gets a laugh. As Russell's boyfriend, Ted McGinley benefits from the same effect, with his ineffectualness used for himbo-ism. She and Reynolds banter well, and thankfully the inevitable romance is given a light touch. The only Phillips line that passes for wit is someone referring to the "reverse Midas touch, where everything touched turns to manure", though Reynolds is around to underplay. If the divisive focus and ultimately the seriousness with which we are supposed to take the court case are questionable, Crichton pulls us along with his skill. He creates multiple scenes of messy group anger, and provides a beautifully executed climactic chase. Ned Beatty is also pleasing as the District Attorney, probably the only one who attempts the region dialect.

Why Walken didn't win an OscarTM for his acting in this role is beyond me. In fact, so many superstars had their first major acting roles in this movie, including David Caruso, Wesley Snipes and Laurence Fishburne - that always adds to my enjoyment. The innovative style-setter, other than "Scarface" with Al Pacino, for top-of-the-line gangster style violence. Simply put, I will always love this movie.

With a tawdry plot and a short list of suspects, Twisted gives armchair detectives an easy chance to figure out whodunit. Critics roasted this pulpy potboiler, in which Ashley Judd (attempting to repeat the thriller success she had with Double Jeopardy and High Crimes) plays a San Francisco homicide detective who is her own prime suspect in an ongoing serial murder case, in which all of the victims are men she recently slept with. These one-night stands, and a problem with alcoholic blackouts, make Judd's wine-drinking character the loose cannon on the case, and her partner (Andy Garcia) and police commissioner mentor (Samuel L. Jackson) have their own reasons for wanting the case to close. Apparently nobody bothered to point out numerous weaknesses in Sarah Thorp's B-movie screenplay, and with no apparent interest in the proceedings, director Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff) allows Judd to look silly, Garcia to overact, and the whole movie to unfold in murky darkness and dimly lit rooms. Never saw Ashley Judd before but she certainly has the look and the moves to make this film a good one. Some fairly brutal shots but, on the whole, more of a who-done-it than a bang 'em up show. Jackson handles his role with authority while the rest of the cast mostly support nicely. Actually, much as an old fashioned mystery, pretty much plays fair with the audience as to the what, if not the who, at the core of it all. In summary, quite a neat 90+ minute package.

I had heard several people say, "Don't rent this movie; it stinks," but took a shot anyway because Ashley Judd is appealing (looks-wise) to me. Well, I wouldn't buy the film but it worth the rental. It wasn't bad at all.

It was a decent "serial killer movie" except for the ending which went on too long and got a bit sappy, but a lot of movies are know for that. However, by the end, all the characters (including Judd's "Jessica Shepard") had worn thin and I was glad to see it end.

I also had heard that the ending was easy to figure out but I didn't find that. So, don't believe everything you hear; it's nothing to spend a lot of money on, but you could do a lot worse.

San Francisco Police Officer Jessica Sheperd (Judd) is going for the big time. She's just gotten a promotion from beat cop to Inspector in Homicide, which is a dream job. She's got a lot to prove since her Dad was a serial killer who ended his spate of deaths by killing Jessica's Mom and then himself.

But, she's got the Police Commissioner (Jackson) on her side. John Mills (Jackson) took the 6-year-old orphan of his former partner and raised her to be the best cop around. He predicts Jessica will be the next Police Chief.

But, Jessica's got a dark secret. She's haunted by her father's actions and she's burying those ghosts with alcohol and sexual encounters.

When her former sexual partners start showing up dead and she's having blank spells, Jessica and most everyone else suspect her of being the killer. But is she?

While "Twisted" is weak in some areas, the mystery is still there. This is one of the better acting jobs by Judd, who really goes from luminous to haunted in the space of a few minutes.

TERRIBLE script with no thrills AT ALL, and a "least likely suspect" you see coming a mile away (since there are only three principal characters in the movie.) Ashley Judd is, at best, mis-cast, playing a hard-bitten SF cop like she was auditioning for the New Mouskateers. An utterly mediocre movie by a good director - the only real mystery.

"MOTHER FIXATION" 2005-02-19

The most compelling aspect of this made for Canadian TV thriller is the adoption angle. William McNamara plays a young man who was given away by his mother at birth and unfortunately has developed a psychosis in seeking revenge on her for abandoning him. We first meet him as a little boy who sets fire to his current set of parents. Next, he's a bright, apparently indisposable executive assistant to stockbroker Donald Sutherland. We know things are a little weird though when McNamara brutally attacks the man whose job he took in the elevator and then makes it look like he is the victim. It soon dawns on us that McNamara has other sordid plans in the offing. We learn that Sutherland's second wife (his first died in a car accident) gave away her first child as she was only seventeen and wasn't ready for motherhood. Put two and two together and you'll see where the film is heading.

Sutherland is a little more animated and upbeat than usual; Lesley Ann Warren is very good as his wife and McNamara's birth mother. Joe Pantoliano and Tia Carrere have supporting roles but aren't sufficient enough to affect the film itself. McNamara chews up the scenery, trying to combine a calm gentlemanly young man with his obvious psychotic outrages. Most of the time it works for him but his inexperience shows in his final scenes, but strangely enough NATURAL ENEMY was a highly competent thriller that kept me involved and intrigued.

This Canadian TVM directed by Douglas Jackson is beautifully lit and features an unusual idea for the serial killer genre. We are told that studies show that violent criminals who have been victims of child abuse are often adopted children, so this thriller takes a huge swipe at the adoption industry by making the protagonist an abused adopted child who wants to direct his violent energies towards his natural mother. Even though this premise indulges in the preposterous assumption that women who give up their babies for adoption do so as an act of selfishness, it still gives the material a queasy fascination, even in spite of a screenplay that's only freshness is in the perverse twists of fate that serial killers always seem to prosper from. Jackson's casting is mixed, with a bearded Donald Sutherland remarkably more animated than usual, but Lesley Ann Warren miscast. Her little girl voice and fine-boned neurosis are more suited to single women in distress or girlfriends at best. Jackson errs greatly in casting William McNamara, since we know him as the Copycat killer, and because McNamara isn't too subtle. Since he plays his murderous intention all the time, we're amazed that the others can possibly begin to trust him, though his obvious line readings actually score an unintentional laugh when he yells "Happy Mother's Day" in a non-celebratory moment.
The treatment has it's share of ridiculous touches. Someone speaks without being aware of a video camera on tripod filming them, a case history is confided to a person the speaker has never met before, there is a gay plot point which is inexplicable, an odd scene where Warren is enclosed in a curtained booth in a hospital room, and a song on the soundtrack "No one ever loved me like you". However Jackson delivers a verbal editing cut from Sutherland speaking to someone in one room then speaking to the same person in another, and we get a nice interior pan of windows leading to Warren in darkness knocking.

With a core audience of gameboys and hot-rodders aged 25 and under, xXx: State of the Union is the kind of action movie that requires literally no thought to enjoy. With Vin Diesel's original character just killed in Bora Bora (for details, see the uncensored unrated director's cut of xXx), Ice Cube steps in to play bad-ass, and the whole franchise takes on a hip-hop edge that's almost admirably absurd. The asinine plot is anarchy in Washington, D.C., as an insanely hawkish Secretary of State (Willem Dafoe) plots a Capitol coup just as the President (Peter Strauss, playing it straight) is giving his state-of-the-union address. All of this is prefaced by Cube's recruitment as a former Navy SEAL turned new-xXx, escaping from jail (Dafoe's character put him there), hooking up with an old flame who runs a chop-shop full of the world's hottest wheels, and reuniting with his old commander (Samuel L. Jackson) for a bullet-train climax that feels like Mission Impossible Lite. And i mean it. This movie is so bad that it makes the first film look better than any bond film ever(not that the first one was bad though). Ice cube gets so annoying trying to have a "though guy" look. First, action heroes aren't fat or gangster, second, just don't watch this movie!

I think the second XXX is an okay sequel. I was surprised they didn't have same actor portray agent XXX. Ice Cube is unlikely in an action hero role, just doesn't seem the right body type, but I thought he did a good job. I liked the prison break, one of my favorite parts of this movie. I thought the movie was a tad too long, like most movies these days, but there was plenty of action to carry it through. My overall opinion, Not bad.

This guy is ugly, fat/chubby... all he can do is give a gay "mean look"... but it looks more like he needs to use the bathroom. Ice Cube (as dumb a stage name as one can get by the way) is actually a pretty talented writer. Maybe he should stick to that. Because no one, and I mean no one, buys his attempt to be a tough guy. He just looks soft, like a dough boy, minus the ugly face. So glad Vin passed on this dog of a movie.

I haven't seen the original "xXx" , but I'm doing my best not to be prejudiced by the lazy mediocrity that is its sequel. As big and competitive as the modern action/adventure genre is, "State of the Union" brings surprisingly little to the table, with promises of big fights, big guns, big shootouts, and big excitement left unfulfilled by a director (Lee Tamahori, " Die Another Day" ) who seems to have thought that simply putting rapper/actor Ice Cube ("Three Kings") into the starring role would be good enough to account for everything the film lacks. When judged against everything else that was and is on the market, "Union" brought a peashooter to a gunfight and was swiftly and rightfully forgotten by most folks.

The story: when the xXx program is infiltrated by an insurrectionary splinter faction headed by a corrupt general (Willem Dafoe, "Spider-Man" ), a new agent is chosen in the form of an incarcerated Navy SEAL (Ice Cube). With aid from both new and returning allies, he must uncover the insurgents from within to thwart a plot to overthrow the US government and assassinate the president.

As I understand it, the original film's premise was to mix action with extreme sports. "State of the Union" has no such foundation; it's simply your run-of-the-mill "gotta-stop-the-bad-guys" take that has been done about a thousand times throughout cinema history. Absolutely nothing about the film stands out: no high-risk stunts, no extraordinary special effects, no revolutionary characters...nothing. I can't help but go on about how little action the film has to show: there are approximately two hand-to-hand fights, about the same number of shootouts, a car chase or two, and a somewhat cool encounter between two tanks - almost completely by the book. Ice Cube makes a decent (if somewhat stereotyped) action hero, but with so little to work with, he's got no chance to live up to Vin Diesel.

There's nothing much to fall back on: with the performance of Samuel Jackson, there's nothing beyond decent that Dafoe, Scott Speedman ("Underworld"), Peter Strauss ("Men Don't Tell"), Xzibit, or Nona Gaye ("Ali") bring to the table, and there's no meaningful underlying message or even particularly good humor to divert our attention. While the movie is competently made, technically, it feels nothing short of toothless: before the end of the first half, you'll have seen just about everything there is to see, and unless the producers choose both a different star and a more competent writer, there'll be little to look forward to for the inevitable "xXx 3" .

Unless you're a fan of either Ice Cube or Xzibit (or a particularly diehard fan of "Sam the man"), there'll be no need to pick up this poorly-conceived actioneer. The two stars you see at the top of this review acknowledge that the film was shot in English and was in focus; if I were basing my review on how memorable the flick was, it'd get less than one star.

Then again, LaBute, who divides his time between cinema and theater, didn't write the material. Jackson, as nasty as Aaron Eckhart in LaBute's In the Company of Men). A strict father of two, Turner works in a diverse unit (Jay Hernandez plays his partner), but takes less kindly to interracial relationships. From the start, he makes the Mattsons uncomfortable with inappropriate remarks and unwarranted intrusions, like the security light trained on their bedroom, under the guise of self-appointed neighborhood guardian. Initially, Turner's actions exacerbate the tensions between the seemingly happy pair--Lisa wants to start a family, Chris wants to wait--until they realize they'll have to work together to protect themselves from their troubled neighbor. And since he's a member of the LAPD, Turner's colleagues have his back, despite the break-ins and flat tires bedeviling the Mattsons. When they make it clear they intend to stay, Turner takes his harassment campaign to the next level. The A-list cast does what they can, but the B-movie script from Howard Korder and Passenger 57's David Loughery, offers few surprises--at least to those who've seen Fatal Attraction and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle--and LaBute's by-the-books direction lacks its usual bite. --Kathleen C. ...but at $3.95, you can't miss.

OK, at times the sound is muffled, the color washes out, there's a bit of streakiness, the picture seems to shake, and it has the appearance of the usual low budget film. BUT, the movie is absolutely riveting and the flaws are minor distractions. I watched it then had to watch it again.

Not the typical commando-trained man on the run flick, as in The Bourne Identity, but a slower paced, perhaps more thoughtful type of story. Sir Robert (O'Toole)goes to ground while being pursued after failing to assassinate Hitler and being tortured then escaping. We see his determination and ingenuity (again, not the usual Hollywood sort of stunts), but also the man he is.

I did not catch on to the reason why he went after Hitler until later in the movie, so disagree with an earlier viewer. However, I've not read the book before seeing the movie. There are hints about what happened and when I realized what had occured, it increased the tension, rather than ruining the end for me.

John Standing is terrific as the pursuer, Harold Pinter has a nice scene, Alistair Sim plays the doddering uncle well, but it is Peter O'Toole who makes the movie.

O'Toole is excellent at dry humor and getting across a page of dialog with just a look. There's a wealth of both in Rogue Male.

It's a shame this movie is not better visually and does not get much notice among O'Toole's works. It is, however, a movie that will keep you guessing about what will happen and is well worth a look. In a recent interview, O'Toole said Rogue Male was his favorite movie and it is easy to see why.

For parents: Since I have kids and do not trust the ratings system (and Rogue Male is unrated), I appreciate reviews that note what might be objectionable for kids.

Rogue Male is intense at times and shows Sir Robert being tortured- blood on his face and facial expressions during 2 incidents. There's a couple other violent moments- nothing very graphic or worse than what they've seen on TV. Teens might find it a bit slow, but interesting. Not for kids under 13.

The DVD has no closed captions or subtitles, and they're needed due to the poor quality of the sound track. Actually, the DVD appears to have been manufactured reasonable well, and its poor quality is due to its source material. The original film was obviously not a master and shows wear from use and poor storage.

Still, the quality is acceptable enough for me to keep it rather than return it for a refund.

The novel, by Geoffrey Household, is well-paced and builds to a satisfying climax based on profound revelations. The movie pushes those revelations to the beginning, which robs the main character of his motivation to swing into action at the end. I enjoyed the movie to a point, but this is one of those cases where the film makers would have done better to stay more consistent with the book.

Great sci-fi romance, depicting a romantic affair from a male's perspective: conflicted feelings over two different women, the excitement and freedom found in the new girl versus the memories of the one that has stood by him "forever."

I found myself engrossed by the technology, blending of human languages, bureaucracy and the mystery and magic of this futuristic Earth. Granted, the story doesn't have a fairytale ending, but, for those of you who saw it, it shouldn't have had one, for ethical reasons.

Essentially, the film is about the possible circumstances people will find themselves in, as we continue to advance (if you'd like to call it that) politically and technologically, in medicine, science and our forms of government. We're taking up bits and pieces of one another's languages, beliefs, foods, etc. And, we're also moving towards more of an international form of government. The creators of the film saw this, along with how the have-nots would coexist, 'or not,' with the haves, and created something easy to foresee and relate to, for 21st century human beings.

Don't listen to the three star rating, this film doesn't follow the conventional format, isn't full of violence, aliens or gore, but it's really cool, from the technology to the sincerity and non-judgmental approach to how complex human emotions can truly be.

Going in to this film I had high expectations as I love the actors and the plot/premise and comparrisons to gattica got my hopes up.

This was simply AWFUL.

"FRACTURED, THOUGH BEAUTIFUL" 2008-12-19

I enjoyed the quiet desperation of the main protaganists ( Tim Robbins, and Samantha Morton ) in this visually stunning film. Still I found the plot to be under-developed, and somewhat derivative of GATTACA, BLADERUNNER, LOGAN'S RUN and HARDWARE. The quiet sensuality of the illegal affair between the main characters is a nice, though again, evocative counterpoint to the dehumanized, prohibitive, and coldly sanctioned society of the privileged world that William ( Robbins ) is a part of. One of the most glaring problems with the movie's premise was why wouldn't the-powers-that-be in this neatly packaged, little world simply forbid conception between clones with similar genetic patterns, instead of 'love' altogether?

The music was quite good, and helped the choppy plot tremendously. The camerawork was exceptional, and Robbins and Morton were convincing as fateful lovers. There is imagery in the film that will stay with you well after the movie ends, and that make up for some the story's basic problems. It is worth seeing.

If you liked "Gattaca"," Blade Runner" and "I am Legend", then this movie would be highly recommended.

The effects are not worth mentioning; they should have used different cars and different clothing; this would have made a big difference. In the meantime the dialogue and the story is all very interesting and worth your time.

Say what you will about modern horror and the extremities it goes to in making an audience cringe - at least it's doing SOMETHING right. The watered down horror era of the late 90s/early 00s is over. Whew.

All these movies were good for (Valentine, IKWYDLS, etc.) were jump scares and pretty people getting sliced and diced, even if you didn't really see much of it. It was horror for the NSync and Britney crowd. "OMG, LYKE, DON'T GO IN THERE AND STUFF!"

The more time passes, the more I realize I can't even enjoy these films for cheap nostalgia (class of '99 boeeeeey!). My generation got the shaft with the horror genre. I mostly watched stuff from the 70s and 80s back then anyway. Blockbuster Video was just a few blocks away.

Two stars for the stylish college setting. Beautiful building.

The first xxx movie had a certain charm with it's unnglamerous but likeable super agent engaging in wild stunts. It Had a decent story for that type of fantasy movie and was a decent a budget movie. That can't be said for this one however and Vin Diesel wisely stayed away from this really bad A movie. It has alot of good actors in it who must have gone insane to appear in this flick. If it were a bad b movie you could say: "well that's what you get" but this was a higher budget flick. It has a hero who convinces murderous gnngstas to help him fight evil bad guys by telling them that what's good about this country is that you can still car jack (and kill innocent people) a block away from the capital building! Yes that's the mentality of this movie which aims to please fan's of gangster crap rap.

It has stunts that are silly and weren't meant to be, like a car traveling down railroad tracks and of course it is a perfect fit as the wheels burn away!. Samuel L jackson ,a man of some class, must have had a large house payment due to be in this travesty.

And ALMOST every A movie that features rap in it's soundtrack has been a failure, this one also has that hampering it's likeability. The blu ray print is very good but nothing can save this thing that was made by men who worship street thugs; regardless if they kill little kids and destroy their own people with drugs. That's why the hero is a creature of their perverse mindset and nowhere even near anyones but the lowest (gang rap, not other kinds of rap) type of thug reality version of a trained spy or secret agent.

Jackson), biochemist (Sharon Stone), and an astrophysicist (Liev Schreiber), and when they enter the alien ship they discover a mysterious sphere inside. What they don't know is that the sphere has the power to manipulate their thoughts and perceptions, and before long the scientists' undersea habitat is a veritable haunted house of frightening visions and creeping paranoia. Who can be trusted? What is the sphere's purpose, and why is it on the ocean floor? Sphere makes some attempt to answer these questions, but the film is a mess, and it leads to one of the most anticlimactic endings of any science fiction film ever made. There are moments of high intensity and psychological suspense, and the stellar cast works hard to boost the talky screenplay. But it's clear that this was a hurried production (Hoffman and director Barry Levinson made Wag the Dog during an extended production delay), and as a result Sphere looks and feels like a film that wasn't quite ready for the cameras. When this movie came out, several of my friends and I were anxious to see it. Big-name stars, lavish special effects, a Michael Crichton story...how could it possibly suck?

An hour into the movie, we all exchanged bored, please-God-make-it-stop glances, and in unison, we got up and left for the blessed relief of daylight. I never read the book, but a co-worker of mine says it was boring, too, which might account for the movie's meandering, non-sensical plot. I'm a big sci-fi fan with a pretty high tolerance for convoluted, hold-on-we're-getting-there storylines, but even I have my limits...what was the point? The dialogue was inane...I agree with the Amazon reviewer: everything felt rushed, like they filmed the rehearsals -- overly wordy lines, haltingly delivered, lacking any conviction or genuine emotion. To be fair, I didn't see the ending, so I can't really say it was the worst sci-fi movie I've ever seen. I will say it was the worst sci-fi movie I couldn't finish.

Received product quickly with standard shipping. However, when i tried to play the dvd, it would not load in any of my dvd players, i kept getting a message saying "disc error". I notified the company of the issue and they promptly sent out a replacement free of charge with no questions asked and appologized for the problems. Again i received the product quickly, within a few days and it worked fine. I don't know what the issue was with the first disk but i did note that the playable side of the first one i'd gotten was a goldish color where as the second one was silver. So i wonder if i'd gotten a foriegn "knock off" the first time. In either case, i appreciate the way the good company handled the issue and acted promptly.

If we push the limits of the possible, which is a key theme of the movie, who knows what this will unleash in ourselves. An intentionally understated Bruce Willis and overstated Samuel L. Jackson explore the Superman as Everyman theme. Another key theme, is the exploration of good and evil, in terms of means and ends, which is presented in many very interesting scenes. (If a student needs a movie with meat on it, to write a review, this is definitely one to pick). The movie builds to a very suspenseful conclusion, and then to an extraordinary coda. So, don't wander off before the movie is finished. Stay with it, and the movie will definitely stay with you.

"One of the most underrated films in recent memory" 2002-04-16

Imagine the most realistic Issue #1 comic book movie. A film in the same vein as Batman and Superman but done in a very realistic way. Remember, it still is a comic book movie, just on the surface it doesn't quite seem that way even with this Elijah character constantly referring to comic books and superheroes. My friends, I give you Unbreakable. It is THE best superhero film since 1992's Batman Returns. The film has suspense,mystery,drama, and good old fashioned good vs. evil. It is too bad that this film wasn't nominated at least for it's stellar score. The film and score was underrated in my opinion but now that it is on DVD you shouldn't miss out on this gem!

Hollywood Pictures Home Video held me hostage for ten minutes after inserting The Sixth Sense into my DVD Player. I was unable to fast-forward past the previews and the menu button was disabled. I am really ticked off that, after paying for this movie, the author of this DVD insists on wasting ten minutes of my life every time I watch this movie to force me to watch their movie previews over and over again. Life is too short. If I am forced to watch ten minutes of commercials everytime I play this DVD, then the DVD should have been given to me for free. I paid money to own this video so I can watch it on my own time and at my convenience. I refuse to own any movie which sucks my life away from me, even ten minutes of it. Life is too short. Do not buy this release. (btw - I liked the movie)

"Incredible Unbreakable" 2001-10-26

This movie has restored my faith in the ability of Hollywood to produce movies that are worth watching. Before I watched this movie, I expected an obvious play on the Sixth Sense motifs and ideas. What I found, to my pleasant surprise, was a well-thought out, well-written movie about an unknowing hero. Bruce Willis gives a good performance alongside Samuel L. Jackson. I found myself enjoying the well-developed storyline along the way, and when I reached the ending, the movie took on a whole new depth as the last piece of information was revealed. I would highly recommend this movie to any fantasy/drama/thriller fan.

These are two excellent movies by one excellent Director: M. Night Shamalyam. His direction and storywriting is consistently good, and his movies explore more supernatural topics such as sixth senses and good vs. evil. Bruce Willis' acting in both is great as well. Pick this up today.

If you like psychological drama and music from the 1930's and 1940's, then you will love The Singing Detective. It never got much air play in the United States but was quite popular in England. The story takes place in a hospital ward and there are frequent flashbacks to the author's childhood and frequent forays into the writer's imaginative world. There is a brilliant blurring of fantasy and reality that keeps you guessing about the outcome right to the end. This was a miniseries so it is over six hours long but worth every minute.

We have yet to watch Pennies from Heaven but expect it to be good too.

The only reason to rent this C-grade telemovie is the 30-second appearance of future "ER" doc, Goran Visnjic, who only utters two lines, but bucks the trend of his film appearances by not getting himself killed in the process.

Otherwise, it's a routine action thriller, with lots of guns, explosions, evening gowns, chases, and bad acting aplenty.

"A disappointing sequel" 2000-02-16

I felt this was a big disappointment compared to the first one (Detonator). While the chemistry between Mike Graham (Pierce Brosnan) and Sabrina Carver (Alexandra Paul) is evident, the script was poorly written and I felt that this movie was just thrown in together. It was not a very suspenseful movie, and some of the acting is pretty atrocious, especially by the characters in Hong Kong. The first Detonator was very well-written, well-directed, and well-acted with great actors such as Patrick Stewart, Ted Levine, and Christopher Lee, but I could not believe that the same director was responsible for this sequel. I would definitely stick with the first Detonator.

Of all the made for TV movies I have ever seen (This one was made for USA as a USA network original) this has got to be the best one. It is a great story which is 10 times better than the 1st. This movie is a must for action adventure lovers. I brought this video from you. You saved me some money on it.

Here is the Bond man again as Mike Graham.

In this one you see a mutual chemistry between Graham and Sabrina.

He orders vodka martini, straight up with a twist.

This one could have been longer too.

It was unusual seeing Pierce with long hair, but you get the feeling by the opening that he just got back from this mission before they send him off to help Sabrina on a mission, and he just didn't have time for a hair cut and shave.

Anyway, he still looks great to me.

"Where's "The Lost World"?" 2004-06-26

Here is an interesting combination of movies that initially may not seem to make sense. Why have the first and third movie in the series and leave out the second? There are two possible reasons. First, there is a trilogy set available with a fourth DVD that covers the making of the series. I prefer that set over this one because it is comprehensive and, though the second movie is my least favorite, it gives me the entire set in a single collection. Second, there are many people, myself included, that felt the second movie was too unbelievable and had too many plot holes, and passed that movie over.

Of course, the first movie introduced us to what digital computer technology could do for dinosaurs. The movie was as ground-breaking as "Alien" was in its time. While there were a few plot inconsistencies, the plot and the action was so fast that you did not have time to dwell on them. Sam Neill and Laura Dern were outstanding and believable leads in their roles, as well as Richard Attenborough. I cringed, and still do, every time I see the tyrannosaurus try to catch up with the jeep. This scene was but one of the many excellent scenes in this movie.

"Jurassic Park III" simplified the plot, added new dinosaurs, and allowed the characters to develop more than "The Lost World." The short length of the movie forced the movie to be more simple than the previous movie, and that simplicity made for a good movie. The best new dinosaur in this movie had to be the pteranodons, though the spinosaur was great also. The characters in this movie generally acted as I would expect them to, and there were fewer outright acts of stupidity. Even the theft of a raptor egg was done in ignorance. So while it was a convenient plot device, you would expect something like that by someone with only minimal knowledge of dinosaurs. I was very happy to see Sam Neill returning in the role of Dr. Alan Grant. His character particularly is very believable.

If "The Lost World" was just too contrived for you, and you are uninterested in the fourth DVD in the trilogy collection, then I recommend getting this collection. Five stars for having the two best movies of the series in one collection.

Have you ever been a dino freak? Then this movie is for you. Yes the movie is a bit intense, parnets cautioned for the younger ones. And yes if you have ever read the books, they so badly fall off the track. but it is fun none the less. the begining is awesome, it brings you straight into the momentum of the danger of this park and never slows down. and it keeps you chilly all through the movie.

"This health resort isn't so healthy after all..." 2009-06-14

This is probably my favorite movie from the David Suchet Poirot series. Amazingly acted with a great mystery and beautiful surroundings, "Evil Under the Sun" has all the great features of the regular TV show.

After eating out at a restaurant, Poirot collapses, which is attributed to him being very overweight. So, Poirot, along with Captain Hastings, takes a trip to a health resort called Sandy Cove. But even here, Poirot cannot escape from murder for murder is everywhere under the sun-especially where Poirot is concerned.

The film is different from the book, but I think most of the changes make this film better. Unlike the book, Captain Hastings accompanies Poirot to the resort. Chief Inspector Japp also shows up when the murder is announced. Also, Linda Marshall is replaced with Lionel Marshall who only plays a small part in this mystery drama.

I highly recommend this film. The setting, partially filmed on Burgh Island, is perfect and the mystery is very intriguing. If you love Poirot, don't miss this one!

Just as Ronald Colman was the best Bulldog Drummond and Rudolf Rassendyll, Colin Firth was the best Mr. Darcy (sorry, Mr. Olivier) or, getting closer to the genre, just as the late great Jeremy Brett made the ideal Sherlock Holmes, David Suchet has become the definitive Hercule Poirot. Suchet has earned this place by virtue of his very good acting and his longevity in the role. Case in point, even though I liked Peter Ustinov in his many turns as Poirot, I feel that David Suchet's version is superior. Suchet simply puts it down perfect as the prissy but astute little Belgian sleuth. In comparison and even though Poirot does favor affected mannerisms, Ustinov's take seems couched in even more over-the-top conceits.

In EVIL UNDER THE SUN, when Poirot keels over at his friend Capt. Hasting's Argentinian restaurant, he is diagnosed with being medically obese. Recommended to undertake a "strict regime of diet and exercise, sunshine and the sea," Poirot is booked passage to the health resort island of Sandy Cove, accompanied by Hastings. But, even on forced holiday, Poirot's little grey cells are constantly churning away. So, in the confines of a seaside paradise, he senses and tries to avert an imminent crime, but fails. Under the afternoon sun, a strangled body is found on the beach, of an actress doomed to die. Poirot must work out the vagaries of a puzzling timetable and air-tight alibis and sift thru sordid doings ranging from indiscreet flirtations to drug smuggling, from a long harbored revulsion to typical jealousies and blackmail. As the investigations unfold, the odd little Belgian suspects that not only is the murderer extremely cunning and devilish, but that he had certainly killed before.

Naturally, near everyone is a suspect, including a most intense ex-vicar, a troubled sixteen-year-old, and even an athletic spinster. While Ustinov's Evil Under the Sun is entertaining, its all-star casting exudes a certain neck-craning, celebrity-watching feel. Suchet's version acquaints us with little known actors who seem to be more suited to their supporting roles (and who also aren't too big of a name for their roles). I've gone thru pretty much all of Christie's Poirot mysteries, but it's been years since I read EVIL UNDER THE SUN, and I've forgotten how very cleverly the murder was committed. I used to read quite a lot of mystery novels and I've always held that Agatha Christie is one of the most diabolical practitioner in the genre. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (The Agatha Christie Mystery Collection), And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot Mysteries), and Curtain (Hercule Poirot) are particularly awesome in terms of the resolution to their respective mysteries.

Hercule Poirot belongs to that niche which features the more atypical detectives. Poirot, like Nero Wolfe, Father Brown, or the Old Man in the Corner, aren't lean, mean men of action. Agatha Christie writes her fastidious little Belgian with a waxed mustache, a mincing walk, and a certain smug air about him. Yet, somehow, she's always made him lovable. EVIL UNDER THE SUN isn't the best of Suchet's work as Poirot, but it'll still do very nicely. So mull over the motives, fight thru the red herrings, and see if your own little grey cells can figure it out (I was stumped years ago) before Poirot demonstrates yet again that, well-bred and -mannered and posh though they may be, the English can murder with the best of them.

After watching this Poirot film with David Suchet the only good thing I can say about it is the fact that it was filmed at the Burgh Island Hotel in Devon. The acting is dreadful ! Not even David Suchet with his gentlemanly manners can save this dud ! Get the 1982 DVD version with Peter Ustinov & Maggie Smith & Diana Rigg instead.
